¡Rotary meeting y vuelta al cole!

La segunda semana comenzó con tranquilidad y prosiguió como la anterior: Cross country por la mañana y fútbol americano por las tardes. La diferencia fue que la pasé nervioso y con muchas ganas de que llegara el fin de semana ya que iría a Galveston y el lunes empezaría el instituto.

The second week started calmly and kept on like the previous one: cross country in the mornings and american football in the afternoons. The difference was that I was nervous and looking forward to the weekend because i would go to Galveston and next Monday the high school would start.

-Orientación de Rotary en Galveston:

Del 19 al 22 de agosto estuve en Galveston con todos los estudiantes de intercambio del distrito 5910 que, junto a mí que soy el único del 5830, éramos 12.

Ese primer día llegamos a Galveston, precioso, comimos todos juntos, después fuimos a una sesión de orientación y por último, lo que todos esperábamos, la playa. El agua estaba caliente, había mucha corriente y gran parte de la arena estaba dura y mojada a causa de la marea.
Nos alojábamos en la que sería la típica casa en la playa en una película que para llegar a la playa tiene una pasarela que cruza una zona protegida de dunas, plantas y serpientes. A lo largo del sábado tuvimos dos sesiones de orientación más, fuimos de nuevo a la playa y visitamos Moody Gardens .  Finalmente el domingo disfrutamos por última vez la playa y llegó lo peor... La despedida. Fue un gran fin de semana en el que a pesar del poco tiempo conseguimos hacer un buen grupo, lo repetiría sin dudarlo.

Rotary orientation in Galveston:

From the nineteenth until the twenty-second august I went to Galveston with all the exchange students from district 5910, that with me, the only one from district 5830, were 12 in total.

The first day we got to Galveston -it was so beautiful!- we had lunch together and then went to an orientation session, and later, what everybody was expecting, the beach. The water was warm, the current was strong and most of the sand was hard and wet because of the tide.
We stayed in a house that looked like the typical beach house of the movies which had a walkway next to it that went over a protected dune zone where there were rattlesnakes. All Saturday long we had two more orientation sessions, we went again to the beach and then we visited Moody Gardens.
Finally on Sunday arrived what nobody wanted... The farewell. It was such a great weekend in which despite that it was a short time we made a good group, I would be really pleased to repeat it.

-Vuelta al cole:

Sonará raro, pero tenía ganas de empezar el insti y ver cómo es ser un estudiante aquí. Antes de venir pensaba que el impacto cultual con EEUU no sería tan grande como con otros países, pero me equivocaba, es bastante distinto.

Como ya dije aquí los deportes los valoran muchísimo, lo cual me encanta, pero a parte a la hora de elegir asignaturas es mucho más fácil, no hay que coger un itinerario del cual te guste solo la mayoría de las asignaturas y tener que cargar con otras que detestas. Tienes que cogerte una de ciencias y una de letras obligadas, y las otras seis pueden ser desde cocina, ciencia forense, coro, como ser un buen líder...
 Hay cuatro cursos, del grado 9 al 12, que también son, de menos a más, freshmen, sophomore, junior y senior. Todos ellos tienen la misma oferta de asignaturas ( a excepción de algunas asignaturas) , por lo que en clase no solo estás con gente de tu edad.

Cada persona tiene su propio horario, no hay un grupo de personas que vaya a todas las clases juntos o que coma a la misma hora ( hay comidas A, B, C y D, cada media hora más o menos) lo cual está bien para conocer a gente.

Otra cosa que también me llamó la atención es el orgullo que siente por el instituto, hay banderas animando a los Hornets por todo el pueblo, en casi todas las clases y por todo el instituto; en el recibidor hay una vitrina enorme en el centro donde están expuestos los trofeos de eventos deportivos y académicos, y por las paredes fotos de alumnos que consiguieron una buena posición en fútbol, atletismo, baseball, coro, teatro, cálculo, etc, etc.

-Back to high school:

It may look weird but I was looking forward to be at the high school here and live as a student in the States. Before coming I thought that the cultural shock would´t be as big as it can be with other countries, but I was wrong, it is different.

As I said in the previous entry sports are very important here, and I love that, but in addition it´s also easier when it comes to choose the subjects you are going to study. There are no paths like in Spain (science, arts...) in which you may like some subjects but you have to carry some others you hate. You have to take a science and a language or history or something like that, and the raining six subjects can be culinary, forensics, choir, leadership... 
There are four grades, from 9 to 12, also known as Freshmen (9), Sophomore (10), Junior (11) and Senior (12). All of them have the same choice of subjects (with exception of some), so you don´t only go with people of your age.

Each student has his/her own schedule, there are no groups of people that go together to some classes or that have lunch at the same time (there are lunches A, B, C and D, every 30 minutes aprox.) what I think is nice because you get to know different people.

Other thing that also called my attention was the feeling of proud towards the high school, there are flags supporting the Hornets everywhere in the town, in almost every classroom and in every wall of the high school; there´s a glass cabinet in the center of the hall where they show their most important sports and academic trophies, and all the wall long there are photos of those students who got a great position in state championships of football, track and field, calculus, choir, baseball, theatre...

-Pledge of allegiance ( Juramento de lealtad):

Todas las mañanas en la tercera hora suena un aviso tras el cual toda la gente deja lo que está haciendo, se pone en pie mirando a la bandera estadounidense y a la bandera del estado de Texas y hacen el Juramento de lealtad y el Juramento de Texas.
La primera vez que presencié eso fue en un encuentro de Rotary y me quedé un poco sorprendido y a la vez confundido ya que no sabía que hacer. Las siguientes veces fueron en el instituto, y la verdad es que es uno de esos momentos que no sabes que hacer, pero bueno, me levanto como todos y ya.

-Pledge of allegiance:

Every morning during the third hour the high school secretary calls everybody to do the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag and then they do the Texas Pledge and then, lessons continue.
First time I witnessed it was in  Rotary meeting and I was a little bit shocked and confused because I did´t know what to do. The following times i saw it were at the high school and it was one of those moments you don´t know what to do, but I just stand up as everyone does.

-Himno (The Star-spangled Banner):

Antes de cada evento deportivo (partidos, pep rally...), tanto profesional como de instituto, suena el himno nacional y todos se ponen en pie con la mano sobre el pecho mirando hacia la bandera y aplauden cuando este acaba.

-Anthem(The Star-spangled Banner):

Before every sports event (games, pep rally...), professional or at the high school, level does´t matter, there´s someone singing the national anthem and everyone stands up with the hand over the chest looking forward the flag and when it is over they applaud. 

-Deportes:

Fútbol americano:

El jueves 25 debuté con los Athens Hornets contra Mexia (ma-heia). Fue una experiencia muy emocionante ya que había un ambiente increíble para ser un partido de equipos de instituto. Asistieron tanto alumnos como padres, la banda y las cheerleaders haciendo ruido y animando... Digno de ver la verdad. A pesar de que perdimos 35-6 y fallé el field goal disfruté mucho.

Pep Rally:

Antes del primer partido de fútbol americano de la temporada y antes de cada partido que se juega en casa hay un ``Pep rally´´, que es que todo o casi todo el instituto va al gimnasio, presentan al equipo de fútbol, los animan y hacen juegos, bailes y toca la banda, las Stingrettes y... Mola mucho.
Hubo otro el jueves anterior pero no fue tan espectacular, aún así fue muchísima gente.

Cross country:

El sábado tocó madrugar para estar a las 6 de la mañana en el insta y coger un bus con el equipo hacia Kaufman, donde correría en una carrera de práctica con los institutos a los que Athens se enfrenta en la fase del distrito. Esta vez corrí en la categoría JV y quedé segundo haciendo 5 km en 19 min 33 sec, la próxima será con varsity y para esa habrá que prepararse mucho mejor.

Baseball:

La tarde del sábado la pasé en Dallas, comí allí con los Russell y algunos amigos suyos y después fuimos al estadio de los Texas Rangers, que se enfrentaban a los Cleveland Indians (ganaron los Rangers). Como no, el ambiente era flipante, me encantó.
Después del partido tuvo lugar un concierto de country que también me gustó mucho.

-Sports: 

American football:

On Thursday 25th august I played my first game with the Athens Hornets against Mexia. It was such a great experience because of the incredible atmosphere despite the fact that it was a high school game. Parents and students were there, the band and the cheerleaders cheering the team up... It was worth it. I enjoyed a lot even though we lost 35-6 and I missed a field goal.

Pep Rally: 

Before the first game of the season and before every game played in Athens there is a Pep Rally, in which the whole high school goes to the gym, the team is presented, cheered up and they play with them and other students, the band, the cheerleaders, the Stingrettes... It´s amazing, I loved it.
There was another one the Thursday before but that one was´t as spectacular, there was a bunch of people though.

Cross country:

On Saturday I had to wake up at 6 o´clock in the morning to go to Kaufman, where the first cross country (XCountry) meeting took place. I ran with the high schools I´ll run against on district fase. This time I ran as a JV and I got the second position doing 5 km in 19 min 33 sec, next time I´ll run with varsity and I´ll have to be more prepared.

Baseball:

I spent Saturday afternoon and evening in Dallas, I had lunch there with the Russell family and some of their friends and then we went to the Texas Rangers Stadium, which played against Cleveland Indians (the Rangers won). It´s not surprising that the atmosphere was awesome, I loved it.
After the game a country music performance took place that I liked as well.

Primera semana, primeras impresiones / First week, first impressions

Después de diez horas y media en el avión, por fin llegué  a Dallas donde me esperaban los Russell y Rachel Trimble. Esa tarde no hice más que deshacer maletas y descansar cómodamente como no había hecho en el avión.

After being ten hours and a half flying, I finally got to Dallas, where the Russell family and Rachel Trimble were waiting for me. That evening I did nothing but putting all my stuff inside the closets and drawers and resting comfortably as I hadn´t done in the plane.

La mañana del domingo la pasé en casa de los Russell en la piscina, comimos unas costillas a la barbacoa del diez y más tarde conocí a los amigos de mi hermano con los que pasé la tarde y disfruté mucho.

I spent sunday morning with the Russell family at their swimming pool, and after eating some BBQ ribs cooked by Larry I met my brother´s friends and I had a good time  with them.

Deportes:

-Cross country:
Los entrenamientos de cross country son de lunes a viernes a las siete y cuarto. Por lo que me ha contado el entrenador, aquí las carreras no pasan de 5 km y no hay nada de desnivel así que me tocará acostumbrarme a ir a esos ritmos. Son entrenamientos cortos pero intensos, estas distancias y ritmos me vendrán genial para coger velocidad.

-Fútbol americano:
El martes empecé a entrenar fútbol americano con el equipo del instituto, los Athens Hornets, en la posición de kicker. Tenía muchas ganas de tener esta experiencia. Aquí los deportes están a otro nivel, ya no por que sean buenos o malos haciéndolos, sino por como lo llevan a cabo, me explico.
 Para tres equipos de fútbol, freshmen, JV y varsity, hay más de diez entrenadores y a parte sus asistentes, que son estudiantes voluntarios, y están las casi cinco horas diarias en los entrenamientos dando agua a los jugadores. El material, desde las protecciones hasta las zapatillas, los proporciona el instituto. TODOS son un equipo y se sienten partidarios de él y todos se lo toman muy en serio.

El viernes hubo un partido de práctica contra Rose City que estuvo muy emocionante y que disfruté muchísimo a pesar del breve parón que hubo a causa de una tormenta.

Sports:

-Cross country:
Cross country practices are from monday to friday at seven fifteen in the morning. The coach has told me that here races are 5 km or less and there´s no altitude, so I´ll have to get used to go that fast. Training sessions are short but intense, these distances and speed practices will be great for become faster. 

-Football: 
I started practicing american football on tuesday with the high school team, the Athens Hornets, as a kicker. I was looking forward very much for this experience. Here, sports are different because of how they make it, I mean:
For three teams -freshmen, JV and varsity- there are more than ten coaches and their assistants (volunteer students) that are almost five hours a day at the training sessions giving water to the players. All the equipment is provided by the high school, even the cleat shoes. EVERYONE is part of the team and feels so and all of them take it  very seriously.
Last friday we played a training game against Rose City. It was very exciting and I enjoyed it a lot even though it had to be stopped because of the storm.

Por último, los cambios más drásticos han sido, sin lugar a dudas:

-El clima: Hace más calor que en Alicante y hay poca humedad.

-Los perros: Los Russell aman los perros, tienen cuatro y además ayudan a perros abandonados para que puedan ser adoptados.

-Montañas: Aquí no hay mucha montaña, sin embargo, es mucho más verde que Alicante. La imagen que tenía yo y que tiene bastante gente del desierto de Texas con vaqueros etc, eso es solo en West Texas, en East Texas hay unos bosques increíbles.

-El acento: Ya me avisaron de que era difícil de entender, me llevará unas semanas acostumbrarme.

Last thing I´d like to talk about are the biggest changes there are between Athens and Alicante:

-The climate: In Athens it´s hotter than in Alicante, and there´s no humidity.

-The dogs: Russell family loves dogs, they´ve got four and they like helping abandoned dogs and giving them the chance of being adopted.

-Mountains: There are no mountains in Athens, but it´s greener than what I thought. The image I had and that many people has about Texas and its desert and the cowboys... That´s West Texas. East Texas has amazing forests.

-The accent: I was already concerned that understanding the texan accent would be difficult, but I think that in a couple of weeks I´ll be used to it.

¡Por fin llegó el día!

En menos de 24 horas ya estaré volando hacia Dallas y habrá empezado mi gran aventura americana.
Desde que mi hermano mayor Jaime se presentó para ser Estudiante de Intercambio con Rotary he estado esperando el momento para poder irme yo y... ¡¡POR FIN!! Parecía ayer cuando lo despedíamos en el aeropuerto y mañana estaré despidiéndome yo.

In less than 24 hours I´ll be flying to Dallas and my great american adventure will have begun.
Since my brother Jaime applied for being a  Rotary Exchange Student I´ve been waiting for the moment when I could go and... IT HAS ARRIVED!! It seems to be yesterday when my family and I were saying goodbye to him and tomorrow it´ll be me the one who is leaving.

La cuenta atrás llevo haciéndola desde el miércoles 16 de marzo cuando me dijeron que sí que participaría en el intercambio, y sigo sin creerme que ya haya llegado el momento...

The countdown started March sixteenth when I was told that I would participate in the Exchange Program, and I still can´t believe the moment is that near...

Le estoy muy agradecido a Rotary por la oportunidad que me brindan, a mi familia por el esfuerzo y trabajo que supone y a los Russell por abrirme las puertas de su casa.

I´m very thankful to Rotary for this chance they have given to me, to my family for the effort and work that all of this mean and to the Russell family for hosting me at their house.
